Black History Month provides a crucial opportunity to reflect on the diverse tapestry of our society and acknowledge the often-overlooked impact of Black individuals on our shared history. It's a time for education, celebration, and a renewed commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable future.

October marks Black History Month across the UK. While Canada and the US observe Black History Month in February.

Why Diversity Matters in the Workplace

A diverse workplace, encompassing a variety of peoples, genders, thoughts, and backgrounds, isn't just a matter of social responsibility, but a key driver of success. We know of many like increased creativity and innovation, improved decision making, enhanced employee engagement, etc.

But for businesses, perhaps an often overlooked one is for them to be a Better Reflection of their Customer Base! In an increasingly globalised world, it is so important to have a diverse workforce that understands and empathises with different people's experiences and histories. Allowing companies to better understand and serve their diverse customer base.

Unmasking Bias and Its Impact

Bias, whether conscious or unconscious, can significantly hinder our decision-making processes, particularly in the workplace. It can lead to unfair hiring practices, limited opportunities for advancement, and a stifling of diverse voices. Recognising and addressing our own biases is crucial for creating a truly inclusive and equitable work environment.

Resources for Education and Action

To deepen your understanding of Black history, the impact of bias, and the importance of diversity, here are some valuable resources:

Celebrating Black History Month 2024 in the Office

This year’s Black History Month theme is "Reclaiming Narratives," focusing on recognising and correcting the stories of Black history and culture.

Providing a great theme to actively participate with in the workplace. Here are some ideas:

  • Organise a Lunch & Learn: Invite a speaker to discuss Black history or the importance of diversity and inclusion.
  • Host a Film Screening: Show a documentary or film that highlights Black experiences and achievements.
  • Create a Book Club: Read and discuss books by Black authors that explore themes of history, culture, and identity.
  • Support Black-Owned Businesses: Encourage employees to patronise Black-owned businesses in the local community.
  • Showcase Black Art and Music: Decorate the office with artwork by Black artists or play music by Black musicians.

By actively participating in Black History Month and committing to ongoing education and action, we can create a more inclusive and equitable workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Biscuits or Cookies? Are they the same thing?

Here at The Biskery, we're passionate about all things biscuits... (and cookies)! It's a bit of a conundrum, we know. You see, while we're proudly based in the UK, where "biscuit" is the go-to term for those delightful sweet treats we craft, we've noticed something interesting. Many of our lovely customers, while mostly UK-based, often use the word "cookie" when searching for our baked goodies!
